GOVERNMENT FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR PREGNANT WOMEN IN INDIA
EMPOWERING MOTHERHOOD THROUGH FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The journey to motherhood is a monumental phase in a woman’s life, but for many in the economically weaker sections of society, it brings significant financial stress. To address this, the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka have launched several robust welfare programs. These initiatives are designed to ensure that no mother has to choose between her health and her livelihood. By providing direct cash transfers, the government aims to compensate for wage loss, improve nutrition, and ensure that every child is born in a safe, medical environment.
PRADHAN MANTRI MATRU VANDANA YOJANA (PMMVY)
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is the flagship maternity benefit program of the Central Government. It is specifically designed for women working in the informal sector who do not have access to paid maternity leave.
The Benefit Structure
Under the revamped “Mission Shakti” guidelines, the financial aid is categorized into two main parts:
- First Living Child: A total incentive of ₹5,000 is provided. This is paid out in installments linked to pregnancy registration, at least one antenatal check-up (ANC), and the registration of the child’s birth followed by the first cycle of primary immunization.
- Second Child (Girl Child): In a significant move to promote the birth of girls and improve the sex ratio, the government provides a one-time payment of ₹6,000 if the second child is a girl.

KARNATAKA MATHRUSHREE SCHEME (TAYI SCHEME)
For residents of Karnataka, the state government offers an additional layer of support through the Mathrushree Scheme. This is often referred to locally in connection with the Tayi Card (Mother’s Card) system.
Financial Aid Breakdown
This scheme provides a total of ₹6,000 to pregnant women belonging to BPL (Below Poverty Line) families. The objective is to provide financial stability during the final months of pregnancy and the initial months of breastfeeding.
- The amount is typically disbursed at a rate of ₹1,000 per month.
- It covers the period from the 7th month of pregnancy to the 3rd month after delivery.
- This ensures the mother can afford nutritious food without the pressure of returning to manual labor prematurely.

JANANI SURAKSHA YOJANA (JSY)
While PMMVY focuses on nutrition and wage loss, Janani Suraksha Yojana is entirely focused on ensuring that women deliver their babies in hospitals rather than at home, which significantly reduces maternal and infant mortality rates.
Cash Incentives for Delivery
The financial assistance under JSY is provided immediately after delivery in a government health facility:
- Rural Mothers: Receive approximately ₹1,400.
- Urban Mothers: Receive approximately ₹1,000.
- ASHA Incentive: The community health worker (ASHA) who facilitates the institutional delivery also receives an incentive, ensuring a strong support system for the mother.

HOW TO CLAIM THE TOTAL BENEFIT OF ₹10,000+
By combining these schemes, an eligible pregnant woman in Karnataka can secure a substantial financial cushion. For example, a first-time mother can receive ₹5,000 from PMMVY, ₹6,000 from the Mathrushree Scheme, and ₹1,400 from JSY, totaling ₹12,400.
